President's Message

Thank God for the rains we received on  May 12 & May 25. Although we need  much more, this was certainly a heaven  sent break in the 8 months of severe  drought we have had. The amounts re-  ceived put new life into lawns and pas-  tures, but did little to adding to the low levels of lakes and  stock tanks for cattle and wild animals. With the start of hurri-  cane season, we might get some chances for rain from that, but  hopefully nothing too severe. The recent tornadoes in the  country’s mid section were terribly devastating.

Thanks to all the donors of items for the silent auction and  the plant auction at our regular meeting on May 26. Thanks  also to all of the bidders and buyers, as well as our auctioneer  Barry Lovelace for a job superbly done, and to all who helped  with both auctions. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and  I’m sure, all the buyers went home with some nice treasures.  The club deposited $1,264.58 from the two auctions.

We will report on the June 4th & 5th plant and vegetable  show and sale in the next newsletter.

Concerning our regular meeting originally scheduled for  June 23rd, that date at the garden center has been cancelled.  Instead, we will have a very exciting gathering at Laura Joseph’s home on Sunday, June 26th from 4-6 at 1610 Virginia  Avenue, Austin, TX. Among other things, it will feature a side  trip to the magnificent gardens of Scott Stewart at 510 Cater  Drive, a showing of the purple martin houses with babies and  eggs, plant demos, garden talks, and refreshments. Also featured will be a stunning collection of vintage hats and clothes,  plus a style show. There will also a 1957 Chevy on display.  All who have ever been to Laura’s home and gardens know that  the hospitality and grandeur of it all are not to be missed. So make your plans to attend.

Remember our Board of Director’s meeting will be on Mon-  day, June 13. Check the Calendar of Events Section of this  newsletter for a complete listing of times and places of all up- coming events.

Wilburn
