A Garden Party
Join us for a special program on Sunday June 26 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm at 1610 Virginia Avenue. Parking is available in designated areas. Wear your best Sunday hat and walking shoes as there will be a host of different activities to enjoy. You will have a hard time deciding what to do first!
Tour the Virginia Avenue Purple Martin Sanctuary – You can sit in the shade and watch hundreds of purple martins catch insects, feed nestlings or teach fledglings to fly. You can also visit with neighbors who serve as volunteer purple martin landlords and learn all about the fun and excitement of making the world a better place for purple martins. Dr. Gardner Sumner and other Virginia Avenue landlords will show you how they care for our birds and take you inside a martin nest.
Take the Grand Garden tour – We have a special invitation to stroll through the garden at 510 Cater Drive. This garden is around the corner and across the fence from 1610 Virginia Avenue. Owner Scott Stewart does all the work himself, and you will be dazzled by the vast array of unusual plants, the magnificent setting Scott has created, a panoramic view of Austin, extraordinary water features, exotic koi and water gardens, plus his newly developed hillside gardens. This garden is one of Austin’s finest, and it will be featured later this summer on KLRU’s Central Texas Gardener.
At 1610 Virginia Avenue, enjoy a Vintage Style Show and Vintage Hats Display. See Liz Cadawaller’s fabulous collection of vintage hats, and meet Jennie Peterman as she models her magnificent collection of vintage clothing. You will be fascinated.
In the driveway at 1610 Virginia you can find one of Austin’s most famous cars...a 1957 coral and shadow Chevrolet, one owner car with 52,000 miles. This 54 year old just went to the 2011 Super Bowl and was featured in a commercial with Cindy Crawford last month. Meet the owners and be really amazed.
In the backyard at 1610 join in a pot making demonstration by master potter Christie Rodgers. Some of her beautiful pots will be on display and Christie will be demonstrating how to make your own pots. Sandi Schmidt will also be showing us how to make those fabulous cement leaves which you see in all the magazines. Don’t miss this!
