Fern Team News Update

New woodland fern bed:
Deadline is approaching.  All bids are needed by May 20th!!!!!!!

April 21st Pre-Grant Application Meeting: Grant application is due June 1st with announcements of accepted grants in August/September and 1 year to complete project.  The gift of $1000.00 can be used towards In-Kind contributions.

Volunteer/s to get pricing for boulders & delivery costs.  We need 2-3 bids.

Volunteer/s for 2-3 yards of soil plus delivery costs.

Volunteer/s to get 2 (more) bids for irrigation to meet. Cullen’s (Zilkers irrigation man) plan is to tie in with the existing system. 1 bid will come from Joe Yura.

Email Christie if you can volunteer.  Thanks.

Pond area will be reviewed by PARD for the best solutions for park visitors. We may need to add cost for stone work around pond.

Need your plant list of both ferns and shady-woodland plants, by June 1st.

Grant will not allow for plant costs unless it’s a tree – we have some funds to use towards plants. We thought we would shoot for another Fern Fest, in 2012. That should give use some time to work on it and raise funds for plants. Start thinking of a program, speaker/s and location, besides Zilker.

Grant has to be accepted, and Zilker has to approve the landscaping before we ever start the work.

Fern Beds A and E:
Good news! It looks like the city isn’t charging a parking fee on the weekends!

Weather was beautiful for the April 23rd workday.  Beds are growing back slowly but nicely. The weeds are doing great… BOOO! Surprisingly, the Maidenhair ferns planted around the pond are doing well.

Asked to have the Staghorn ferns to be hung in Bed A and E before they are burned to a crisp in the greenhouse.

The Kimberly (sword) ferns (in bed E top area along rock wall) have not come back; they should be replaced with another fern. Holly ferns were suggested, but the park is finding them to be invasive; we need to come up with another fern. Or replant Kims. Suggestions?

Next workday May 28th: Please note there will be a 9:30-11 wedding ceremony in the Rose Garden, so please be prepared to stop work to allow the ceremony to wander by.
