Can you believe that it’s already May? I suppose it really is true, that when you are busy and having fun, time really does fly!
Our April plant sale and silent auction proved to be very successful. Thank you to all who donated plants and silent auction items, as well as those who bid on and purchased these items. According to our treasurer, the total from both sources was $1,205.00. The plants brought in $547.00 and the silent auction $658.00. As usual, Barry Lovelace did a wonderful job serving as auctioneer. His ad lib and interesting comments during the auction made it very interesting and lively. Thanks again Barry! Also thanks to Joann Lovelace, Barbara Wagner, and Carol Kay Johnson, for managing the silent auction. We also greatly appreciate the clerking efforts of Alice Merculief, Savanna Feyereisen, Irene Franco and Annie Hackebeil, for recording the bid prices and collecting the money from all buyers. Everyone’s involvement in this annual event is truly appreciated.
Forty-two TGCoA members, spouses and friends had a wonderful bus trip to Casa Flora Nursery on May 8. We started at Laura’s place with a light breakfast at 7:00 am, then onto the bus to Dallas. There we received tours of an extensive fern planting area where the ferns, for the most part, are exposed to the elements year-round. After a very tasty lunch at the nursery we had a tour of the spore area, where ferns are grown by collecting, treating, and planting individual fern spores. Our final tour was in the cloning lab, where a high quality fern is cloned repeatedly, thus assuring an endless supply of identical off-springs. Casa Flora exports roughly 300,000 ferns each week to the horticultural marketplace. Before returning to Austin, we had about an hour to tour the Dallas Botanical Garden which, under a beautiful blue sky, provided a fantastic display of color. The trip back to Austin was highlighted with a wide array of snacks and drinks. As near as I could tell, a great time was had by all.
Our Board of Director’s meeting will be on Monday, May 24, and our Regular Club Meeting will be on Thursday, May 27. Also, our Flower and Vegetable Show will be on June 5 and 6. If you’d like to volunteer to help with the show, contact Savanna Feyereisen, show chairperson. If you have plants that you’d like to donate to the plant sale, in conjunction with the show, please contact Lisa Kodosky, sale chairperson. Any volunteering you can offer will be greatly appreciated by Savanna and Lisa.
Check out the Calendar of Events section in this newsletter to get the correct time and dates of all events.
I hope to see each of you at all of these.
Sincerely, Wilburn
