Did you know...

The official insect of Texas is the Monarch butterfly. In 1995 the Texas Legislature voted to make the orange and black butterfly the state insect.

Austin is on the flyway for the butterflies as they migrate from Canada through Texas to their winter home in Angangueo, Mexico. If you’re lucky enough to be on their migration path , as we were one October weekend, they will stop to rest and literally cover the tree branches.

Their larval host plant is common milkweed. Asclepias curassavica is one of their favorites. The leaves of the milkweed are toxic to predators and protects the caterpillars, especially from birds.

In addition to flowers for the weary adults passing through, you can offer them a slurry of bananas, watermelon or any other liquid fruit.
