President's Message

And the drought continues! It was too bad that we missed out totally on what was our best chance for rain from the storm “Don”. This week’s forecast sounds like it will be our hottest week ever. The count on “over 100 degree days” continues to mount. Will we ever get out of this “hot & dry” weather pattern?

Last Thursday’s regular meeting was very interesting with the plant show and tell, the book presentation and sales, and of course, the annual ice cream social and other goodies for refreshments.

Next month’s meeting sounds like it will be very interesting also. Imagine seeing and hearing about the Chelsea Flower Show from England. Don’t forget that the date for that meeting is August 25, 2011.

We are about to start the fall “County Fair season” in Central Texas. I am now a member of the Fayette County Fair Association. As usual, I am the show superintendent for the pigeon show which this year will be held on Sunday, September 4. This will be the 84th annual Fayette County Fair in La Grange, Texas. The overall dates of the fair are September 1- 4, and then you will have the Labor Day holiday to recuperate. Among other things, the fair will have a flower and plant show. Plants need to arrive on Wednesday, August 31, between 1-7pm. They will be judged on Thursday, September 1. They need to be picked up, along with ribbons and prize money, on Sunday afternoon, between 4-7pm. I hope that some of you will be able to show some plants or at least attend. The weather is having a devastating effect on all plants, so it will be interesting to see what has survived enough to show. The Fayette County Fair has lots of entertainment, livestock shows, rabbit, poultry, and pigeon shows, agricultural exhibits, horse shows, a country store, food booths, and many other creative arts and educational exhibits. This is wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

Be sure to check the Calendar of Events Section in this newsletter for the correct dates and times of all upcoming events.

Hope to see you at all of these!

Sincerely,
Wilburn
